I've seen several use cases for product flags alerting the user of various things: "New Product", "Out of Stock", "Backordered", "Coming Soon", "Changes Coming", "On Sale", etc.
It could be helpful to have an option within the product settings to enter custom text and then select from a dropdown of triggers to turn the flag on and off.
Triggers such as: inventory <= 0, inventory > 0, creation date < 30 days, expiration date < 5 days out, backorder on/off, etc.

When you say "user," are you referring to a print buyer or an admin user?
Also, how do you envision this appearing in the UI?
